A Little (Lot) Bit Personal...

As some of you know, I don't have a personal Facebook page for reasons such as - Facebook harbors, causes, and encourages a lot of drama. But it's also a wonderful communication tool - to all audiences. I was wondering how to get this letter I wrote out to the masses, in hopes it would change maybe one, maybe two people's lives. That they would see themselves in my words, or even it helps shed some light on what was going on in my personal life this past year. That is my only intention, that some people may read this - and are in the dark, and will be brought to the light. That they get the help they need, through medication, through therapy, and through God.

There are two blogs written by ladies with depression www.dooce.com www.mooshinindy.com - I have followed both blogs quite a bit over the course of mommyhood and enjoyed reading their wit, stories, and advice. I never thought I had anything to relate to them, other than the fact we are all moms. But something recently made me take a look at the big picture. I wrote this letter to the authors of Dooce.com and Mooshinindy.com and want to share it with all of you.

Please be aware, it does have potty words in it. So, if you are offended by cursing...don't read it. But it's very real, and very me. And without "very me" there wouldn't be a little bit of cursing...heh.

Anyways, here goes:

Dear Dooce and Moosh,

I'm not even sure you'll get this, or read it, or think maybe its creepy unsolicited advice...

No advice here! I repeat, no advice here! Just a small thank you. :)

You see, five years ago when I had my Piper, I loved her. I loved my baby daddy (otherwise known as my husband). But I didnt LOVE LOVE LOVE LURRRRVE them. I just thought something was wrong with me. But, I thought "Meh, I'm probably just stressed."

Meanwhile, baby daddy (aka husband) was being verbally abusive. Then I'd verbally abuse him back. I was a control freak. We were really mean to each other. Like, REALLY mean. Blah blah blah.

So what is the BEST thing we could have done? WHYYY have another baby of course! Duh!

January 2010 we welcomed Paige. Same feelings of "I love her, but I don't feel like my heart is going to explode when I look at her." My feelings of "I love him, but I don't feel like my heart is going to explode when I look at him" were turning into "Oh my fucking God I'm going to stab him" towards the baby daddy (aka husband).

A year went by, I poured myself into exercise and diet control, losing 75 pounds of baby weight. I trained for a triathlon. Baby daddy (aka husband) and I grew apart. He got a saltwater fish tank and damned if he didn't make love to those fish while I was sleeping. All of my heart and soul went into my athletic endeavours, all of his went into his saltwater creatures.

Who really suffered here? Piper and Paige.

Back up to maternity leave with Piper, I discovered your blogs (Dooce.com and Mooshinindy.com). I loved them. Heather, I read your book (It sucked and and then I cried: How I had A Baby, A Breakdown, and A much needed Margarita), I joined dooce.com when it came about - as the years went on I thought, OMG We'd totally be best fraaaans if I lived in Utah. OMG we'd be best frannnns if I lived in Indy. (Speaking of, I live in South Bend, so if you ever want to take me up on that best friend offer, I'm only 3 hours away) But, I thought, that depression stuff? Meh, not real. Not real! Yeah you heard me. You faked all of it. Fakers!

Ok so lets fast forward through all that to July 2011, this year. I hit my breaking point and left my husband. He tried everything. Going to counseling, going on Lexapro. "Im depressed," he said, "that is why I'm so mean. I can't control my emotions. I'm learning how to live again. I am broken." All I heard was "Blah blah blah I want you back so I'll say whatever I can to get you back." He'd say "You really need to look into therapy, just try it, go see a doctor, I really think medication will help you too!" I'd hear "Blah blah blah you're fucking nuts." This went on for two months. He'd beg, he'd plead. I'd tell him to go fly a kite.

Then one day...September 11, 2011 to be exact, I did something I hadn't really done before. I prayed. I mean, I'm spiritual and all that, but I never really sat down and prayed. I prayed to God "Why am I so unhappy? I was unhappy when I was married, and I thought leaving would fix it. I'm still unhappy." The next morning I was given my answer. "You have depression."

That very evening I wanted to go to dinner with baby daddy (oh, he has a name by the way, Brian.). Brian was shocked. I'd basically been telling him to go fuck himself for two months, and now I wanted to have dinner? We went to dinner, I broke down, I said I think I need help.

There's a whole bunch of ooey gooey romance that went into that evening, but we found each other. We fell back in love. But not just any kind of love. (But more on that later...)

I went to the doctor and was diagnosed with depression. I'm on Prozac right now, and they keep increasing my dose month by month. I'm also on Adderol because I have a focusing issue that dates back to my fetus-stage. I was on Ritalin growing up. Anyways, the combination of each, has just....just been amazing.

I have love in my heart for my children that grows every day. I look at them and just want to eat them up. I can't imagine life without them. Even though they are crazy, and the big one (5) is super sensitive, and the little one (almost 2) is mean as shit...I love them so much. LURVE them. LOVE LOVE LOVE them. They are a part of me. They are a piece of me. My heart aches when I am not with them.

I have a love in every fiber of my being for my husband. I get sad when I realize that some people will live in darkness their whole lives, because there is such a negative "stigma" attached to depression, and anti-depressants. Those people will never know the love I feel for Brian. Or my children.

Growing up, depression was never mentioned, or that it was even a possibility. I was just a mean little turd who beat people up. I was just "over dramatic" and "sad." I was a "brat."

Brian and I continue to grow closer each and every day. Piper Paige Brian and I continue to grow and mature and laugh and giggle more and more daily. The anxiety and fear I once had, has subsided. I can enjoy life wholly.

I want to thank you two ladies for putting it out there, all on the table. Because, even though while you were going through your journey's - I didn't "get it" - I get it now. We have friends that definitely do NOT get it and sad to say, they really aren't our friends anymore. But I know, I am not alone. We are not alone.

Steve and I went to high school together. His brother and I had vocational together. It was great to meet Laura and see a bunch of people I went to school with. You know that place - Thode Floral - that I talk about all the time? And that 80% of my brides go to for their awesome flowers? Well the owner Daren and his wife Jeanne are friends of mine, and they asked me to do a senior session for their son Max. I said OF COURSE!

It took a while for Max to warm up to the camera (which is totally normal for all males), once he told me there was a "Magic Word!"

I loved this session. It's kind of dark and spooky - very fun to do!

My father in law is the LaPorte High School Girls (and guys) Swim Coach. This year the girls wanted to do something different for their team photo. (They do something fun and unique every year). One of the girls on the team's family owns a condo near the lake. The condo had a rooftop deck and pool. We took advantage of the beautiful scenery. (Even though it was during a Bears game and Emily's mom and I thought we were getting dive bombed during the flyover...)

I have started swimming on Tuesday and Thursday mornings with these girls to get in shape for my various mountain bike races and the triathalon I'm training for. They've come to be like little sisters of mine and I'm really sad the season is over. What a great group of girls, great role models for my daughters.

This wedding was very special to me. Not only was it two of my very bestest buddies getting married, but my hubby's very bestest buddies, and my daughter was a flower girl. I, myself, was the bridesmatographer for the event. A bridesmaid and photographer. SO - having a flower girl, bridesmaid, and groomsman in the wedding is stressful enough - but to be the photographer too? Luckily, Jess and Mike are a breeze to work with, AND I had two very good friends helping me out on the big day. I would be crazy not to say Amy Straka Photography didn't save my life that day. She was awesome. I get to return the favor in May. (Amy was the one who took over for me in June when I had my appendix out). And, my assistant for the summer, Tim, helped us out with the photobooth.

Jess and Mike - I would say over and over and over how happy I am for you guys, but you know this. I love you guys like you are my own husband and wife, ha ha ha.

If any bride wants my opinion on who does the best wedding flowers, I will say JESSIE AT THODE'S! I mean - HELLO! Look at this!!

Our favorite officer drove by to yell at us for shooting in the road. No, really, he didn't. He stopped to say hi and congrats. He's a friend of ours.

Ive said before that "First Looks" are the way to go in getting photos out of the way before the ceremony. We did this and then did family photos immediately after, so we had TONS of time afterwards for group photos.

I just love how my last few posts have been of friends and their families. There is nothing better than giving the gift of photos to lifelong friends. Loree is one of my friends that I met when I moved to LaPorte. She's been there for me so much, and I can never repay her for how great of friend she's been to me. My best friend Jessica at Thode Floral & Gift in LaPorte did the flowers. Of course, they're gorgeous!

I took this photo to show my mother. Michelle and I graduated the same year in neighboring towns. We got our senior photos done at the same place. The funny thing is, we have the EXACT same photo of ourselves leaning on the EXACT same chest.

Michelle and Matt did a "first look". I highly recommend this to all brides and grooms. It gave us SO MUCH time to do photos before the ceremony (as you will see by this lengthy blog post), and gave them a chance to actually enjoy their cocktail hour! Plus, we didn't have to fight for daylight after the ceremony.

These photos were taken outside Valparaiso's Memorial Opera House - the very place my 2009 bride & groom Diana and Brian got married.

Valparaiso'ians might recognize this wall - one of my favorite shops - Lifestyles.

As a Boilermaker myself - I love seeing Purdue details throughout the wedding. Matt's Fraternity brother married one of my good friend from high school. That is how we came to work with each other. Boiler up!

My good friend Jayme from Photography by Jayme came and second shot for me. I love working with her - we are both moms and just click so well. She helped me with some off camera lighting, such as this gorgeous one we got of the cake.

Michelle's dad is a wonderful dancer. It was so awesome to see him dance. I went home and told Brian, we've GOT to take dance classes...it was just so fun to watch.

I have to say - one of the best group of guests ever. I even shook my groove thing.

(I have almost 40 sessions to blog, due to having 2 kiddos and an emergency appendectomy really took a lot out of me and I spent most of 2010 behind on EVERYTHING!!!)
